Come on in folks, I have a safe haven for you here to escape the dumpster fire that is the Michigan football program. I promise you there will be no mention of concussion protocol, students marching on University president lawns or headset debate. Just like the band from the Catalina Wine Mixer plays strictly 80’s Joel, we will discuss just on the field action football. Nothing more and nothing less.
Last week the state went 1-3, with Michigan State being the sole winner, rolling over Wyoming. The aforementioned Wolverines lost the Little Brown Jug in a show of offensive ineptitude, losing to Minnesota 30-14. The Broncos of Western Michigan tried to make things interesting against Virginia Tech, with super freshman Jarvion Franklin getting my predicted two touchdowns, yet falling to the Hokies 35-17. The Chippewas of Central Michigan opened MAC play with a loss on the road to Toledo 42-28. For my picks last week I went 1-3 against the spread putting my season record at 10-7. This weekend all five Michigan colleges are taking the field, so follow the jump for info on all your favorite teams! (As always games ranked for intrigue/watchability)

For the first time this week we have some of our Michigan schools getting into conference play. Michigan opens up conference play, amidst a developing storm of angst, with Minnesota and their 1950’s offense. Last week the state went 2-3 (with Eastern losing to MSU so no way to expect a perfect week). Western Michigan and Michigan State looked impressive in blowout wins at home. Central Michigan played a dud on the road against Kansas, missing a golden opportunity to win twice in the same season over a power 5 conference opponent. And, the hot seat under Brady Hoke got blazing with Michigan once again failing to reach the red zone in an entire game, in a 26-10 loss at home to Utah.
After last week my picks on the season now stand at 9-4. Pretty good percentage but I have only been picking winners. Starting this week I will pick all games with a winner and against the spread. We have four games this weekend, all with different start times, so it’s a good weekend to get the big game going on the TV while putting some MACtion on the laptop. Luckily for the Eagles of Eastern Michigan they get the weekend off, after being a sacrificial lamb to Shilique Calhoun and the Spartans last Saturday.

I’m back folks! After real life got in the way last week, I am back to get you psyched for a week of college football in the Great Lakes state. Since we last previewed these match-ups the B1G has imploded, MSU and Michigan have lost, Thomas Rawls has been suspended indefinitely for the Chips, Eastern lost twice and Western got a nice win on the road. This week all five teams are in action, with an intrastate match-up included.
One note of change in this weeks’ preview is the slow introduction of using some advanced football analytics, namely F/+ from the great Bill Connelly (click here for a glossary as a resource!). F/+ is a ranking used that combines the Fremeau Efficiency Index and S&P+. Basically it is a ranking that utilizes drive data and drive efficiency. It is an incredible useful rating system and has shown an above average ability to predict the likelihood of wins and utilizes the five factors of football. With that out of the way let’s get to the week’s match-ups, as always ranked in order of intrigue/watchability.
Well, Michiganders week one is in the books and we were just one Western Michigan loss away from a perfect start to the season. Things escalate quickly this week with two stellar road games featuring the state’s flagship programs. The MAC programs in the state will be looking to get an upset over their B1G and SEC hosts. All of our teams are on the road this week, so unless you are one of the lucky few to travel this week, use this as your guide to where to find your favorite Michigan team from your couch this weekend.
Week 2 Games (Ranked in order of intrigue/watchability)
- #7 Michigan State @ #3 Oregon (6:30 p.m. Fox)
This isn’t just the headline game in this state, this is the headline game in the entire country this weekend. Top ten teams clashing, check. Contradicting styles, check. Conference bragging rights on the line, check. This is an absolute monster of a game early in the season that has a great chance at being important in the outcome of the inaugural College Football Playoff.
Devin to Devin is going to be a thing
Well, week one is in the books. No not officially for all of college football, as Wisconsin in battling LSU in the Jerry Dome right now trying to move the B1G to 13-1 on the first weekend. However, for the football teams in our home state of Michigan, this weekend is in the books as Eastern Michigan won on a last second missed field goal from Morgan State just now. That brought the state of Michigan to 4-1 on the weekend and things will ramp up quickly with some great match-ups on the horizon in week two.
Well folks, after summer break here at GHE we are back. One of us got married and one of us got engaged. One of us coached a men’s league softball team while recovering from an injury. One of us became a Colorado citizen by posting weekly hiking photos. And, finally one of us continued to be the GHE/SEC Alcohol champion and ambassador.
Needless to say, we loved our time off but it is time to get back to our mothers’ collective basements and churn out some great sports content. While we started as a site based around the Red Wings, our different interests and talents have led us wanting to cover more. So we will be your one stop shop for all things Michigan sports this year. We will cover all four professional franchises and starting with this post today, will cover the five division one college football programs in this great state. Hell, we may even cover some division two football, if we’re feeling froggy (#LakerForALifetime eh Bob?)
So before we dive into the week one match-ups, I just want to say to anyone reading this, we apologize about the lack of content this summer. Real life got in the way and we vow to stay on top of the site more this year. We do have one request, if you’re reading this, interact with us! Find us on twitter, leave some comments in the stories, let us know you’re there so we can create a great community for Detroit sports fans. Without further ado, let’s preview the games involving our teams this weekend!
This weekend is a sad weekend for me, as for the first time since I was in high school I will be missing the Red Sox’ only visit to Comerica Park in the regular season. That’s right GHE readers I am a Red Sox fan. I pissed my roommates off last year with a passive aggressive cheer off. See he thought it would be funny to yell when the Tigers were up in game two of the ALCS. I found it a lot funnier when Torii Hunter fell into the bullpen and a fat Boston cop from Brookline, Mass became an overnight celebrity.
So you’re probably wondering how did I get this way? No I didn’t just jump on the bandwagon in 2004, I was a Red Sox fan way before that. You see my parents weren’t baseball fans so I had no guidance in choosing a team. So when my dad gifted me a Boston Red Sox batting helmet when I was 5 I started the process of becoming a part of the most annoying, neurotic, obsessive compulsive, wretched fan bases in sports. Here’s the thing guys, I hate most Red Sox fans. Partly due to my love of all things Sawwxx I decided to move to New Hampshire out of college selling tickets for an AHL hockey team (Manchester Monarchs- farm club of the L.A. Kings). I was in heaven for a summer, watching NESN every night the way you cats are spoiled with Mario and Rod on FSD every single night in summer. However, living with those east coast fans and the media circus that surrounds the Sox made me hate most of our fans and truly respect the players for dealing with that. I tell you all this so that you don’t hate me and quit coming to GHE because of my baseball alliance, I am closer to you guys than my own fanbase. With that said let’s get to breaking down the action on the diamond this weekend at Comerica Park in Detroit. Continue Reading
